Most home theater projects go sideways in the same way. Someone buys the display first, then the speakers, then discovers there is nowhere good to put the seating, no clean path for the wiring, and a window that washes out the picture every afternoon. The equipment was never the problem. A theater comes together when the decisions happen in the right order, starting with the room and working outward from there. That sequence is what separates a space that feels like a real theater from a living room with expensive gear in it. In this post, we’ll walk through how to set up a home theater step by step, from evaluating the room to choosing a display, positioning seating, building the audio system, and handling the wiring and control that make everything work as one system.
Step 1: Start With the Room, Not the Gear
Every meaningful home theater decision traces back to the room itself. This means that the first step in any home theater setup is an honest evaluation of the space before a single product goes in the cart. Three characteristics shape everything that follows.
Dimensions: Length, width, and ceiling height determine how large a screen the room can support, how many rows of seating will fit, and which audio layout makes sense. As a general rule, avoid rooms where any two dimensions match, such as a 12 by 12 foot space, since matching dimensions stack up bass problems that are difficult to fix later. Ceiling height matters too, both for screen size and for whether in-ceiling height speakers are an option.
Light control: A window that faces west will fight a projector every single afternoon, and even a bright TV loses contrast in a sun-washed room. Note where daylight enters, which walls could hold blackout treatments or motorized shades, and whether the room can get genuinely dark on demand. Rooms that cannot be fully darkened are not disqualified, but they push the design toward brighter displays or ambient light-rejecting screens, and that needs to be known before the display gets chosen.
Existing construction: Framed but unfinished basements are the easiest rooms to create a home theater in, because wiring can run anywhere before the drywall closes. Finished rooms mean fishing wire through walls, and concrete or exterior walls limit where speakers and equipment can live. Take stock of electrical capacity as well, since a finished home theater deserves dedicated circuits.

Step 2: Choose the Display and Set the Seating Distance
Screen size and seating distance are one decision, not two, which is why sizing the display to the wall is the most common mistake in any home theater layout. The industry guidance works backward from the seat. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommends the screen fill at least a 30-degree horizontal viewing angle from the main seating position, while THX targets 36 to 40 degrees for a properly cinematic experience. In practice, that lands your main seats at roughly 1 to 1.6 times the screen’s diagonal measurement. For a 120-inch screen, that means about 10 to 16 feet, and if your room cannot provide that distance, the screen should shrink to match rather than the other way around.
Vertical placement matters just as much as size. Keep the center of the screen close to seated eye level, and avoid forcing viewers to look up at more than about a 15-degree angle to the top of the image, which is the difference between a comfortable two-hour movie and a sore neck. Once the screen size and position are set, the seating layout follows: the main row at the target viewing distance, any second row raised on a platform so sightlines clear the heads in front, and clear walkways so the surround speakers still have somewhere to go.
Projector or Smart TV?
The display decision usually comes down to a projector with a dedicated screen versus a large smart TV, and the room makes most of the choice for you. A projector delivers the largest image per dollar and the most cinematic presentation. It shines the most in a room with real light control, a proper screen surface, and enough throw distance for the model you choose. A premium TV is brighter, sharper in daylight, and simpler to install, making it the better fit for multipurpose media rooms where the lights stay on and the windows stay uncovered. Resolution factors in as well, since at true theater viewing distances the difference between formats becomes noticeable. In dedicated, light-controlled rooms with screens over roughly 85 inches, projectors tend to win; in bright, shared spaces, a large TV usually serves better.
Step 3: Build the Audio System
With the screen and seating locked, the audio system is built around where people actually sit. The first decision is the channel layout. A 5.1 system places three speakers across the front, two surrounds beside the seating, and a subwoofer, and it remains the baseline for surround sound. A 7.1 layout adds two rear surrounds for rooms with space behind the seating, and immersive formats like Dolby Atmos add height speakers above the listening area, described in notation like 5.1.2 or 7.1.4, where the final digit counts the overhead channels. Larger and more ambitious rooms support more channels, but a well-placed 5.1 system will outperform a poorly placed larger one every time.
The second decision is speaker type, and this is where the room’s construction and aesthetics come back into play. Traditional cabinet speakers offer flexibility and easy upgrades. In-wall and in-ceiling speakers disappear into the room and keep floors clear, which suits dedicated theaters and design-conscious spaces. However, they must be planned before drywalling or retrofitted carefully. Subwoofer count is worth deciding here too, since two smaller subs placed asymmetrically deliver smoother bass across a full row of seats than a single large one.
Step 4: Plan Wiring, Lighting, and Control
Infrastructure is the least glamorous step and the most expensive one to redo, which is why it has to be planned before walls close or gear gets mounted. Speaker wire runs to every planned and future speaker location. Subwoofer cable reaches at least two candidate subwoofer positions. Lastly, conduit runs from the equipment location to the display so the system can accept whatever cable standard comes next. The display connection deserves particular attention. 4K, high dynamic range, and 120Hz gaming signals require HDMI bandwidth that older cables cannot carry. Long runs from a rack to a projector often call for active or fiber optic HDMI to remain reliable.
Lighting is part of the theater, not an accessory to it. Dimmable, zoned lighting lets the room shift from full brightness to a movie scene with pathway lights at a low glow. A lighting control system, such as Lutron, ties those scenes to a single button. Motorized shades belong in the same conversation for any room with windows, since they are what make daytime viewing possible in a space that doubles as a living area.
Control is the final layer, and it is what makes the whole system feel finished. A properly programmed control system turns the entire sequence, including display, receiver, source, lights, and shades, into one command. This is also the stage to plan the equipment rack location, ventilation for heat-producing gear, and a wired network drop, since streaming a 4K movie over spotty Wi-Fi undoes everything else the room got right.
